Stage 1: The Dems just put the nail in their coffin by confirming they are wimps, refusing to force the GOP to filibuster the Bush tax cuts for America’s richest.

Stage 2: The GOP takes over the House, expanding its war to destroy Obama with its new policy of “complete gridlock,” even “shutting down government.”

Stage 3: Obama goes lame-duck.

Stage 4: The GOP wins back the White House and Senate in 2012. Health care returns to insurers. Free market financial deregulation returns.

Stage 5: Under the new president, Wall Street’s insatiable greed triggers the catastrophic third meltdown of the 21st century Shiller predicted, with defaults on dollar-denominated debt.

Stage 6: The Second American Revolution explodes into a brutal full-scale class war rebelling against the out-of-touch, out-of-control greedy conspiracy-of-the-rich now running America.

Stage 7: Domestic class warfare is compounded by Pentagon’s prediction that by 2020 “an ancient pattern of desperate, all-out wars over food, water, and energy supplies would emerge” worldwide and “warfare is defining human life.”

Rather than continuing to cast asparagus on psychology as a pseudoscience, I will attempt to treat it as if it had some basis in reality.  I notice that whenever I inform a psychiatrist he’s an idiot, all the love seems to get sucked out of the room.

Problem 1) Psychology seems to attract idiots. It’s like a big idiot magnet. Perhaps it attracts people who think they can fill the hole in their soul with altruism. Perhaps they wanted to score with that chick with the big boobs. Or maybe they felt they could go introspective and gaze into their navel. Who can understand idiots? They have no center. So one ends up with this ridiculous mindless loop of idiots trying to fix idiots. HOW CAN YOU CENTER SOMEONE ELSE IF YOU’RE NOT CENTERED? Sorry, frustration sneaking through. It’s as if it was a prerequisite for Psych 102. “Must be idiot, PSYCH 101, SOC 101, ENGLISH 101 etc.” So when I needed help I reached into this mad hatter deck and pulled out a non-idiot. How did this happen? Was it an admissions error? Was her uncle a dean at the school? Did she accidentally check the idiot instead of the non-idiot box? Or maybe it was on purpose. Is she afraid that the witch doctors association will find out she’s not an idiot and she’ll lose her license?  It’s like reaching in my pocket and pulling out a live purple rhinocerous with purple polka-dots.  I didn’t know such a thing could exist.  On the up side, I haven’t run across any assholes, helping people wouldn’t occur to them.

Problem 2) The model is wrong. There has not been an advance in the understanding of the human mind since, well, since there has been a human mind. Lets go to neutral ground. Say a physical therapist is trying to teach someone to walk. He (or she, Hesh) is given a set of instructions for re-habilitation. Step 1) put left front foot forward. This has no relationship to the problem at hand. An idiot will continue to coax, cajole, plead with the patient to put his left front foot forward. It’s like trying to teach a pig to sing, it’s frustrating as hell and irritates the pig. An un-locked person might try it once before he determines this is bull shit. He will go to the source book on physical therapy, AHA!! The instructions I was given came from page 46 which is for a horse, humans are on page 27. Hesh can then continue with his task with some hope of success. Psychology didn’t just get the wrong page, it got the wrong book.

Problem 3) It doesn’t work, it is overly complicated, devious and ugly. Truth has beauty.

Problem 4) Psycho-analysis. The concept is medieval . It’s looking for spirits, demons or possession. It’s right there in front of you. You’re talking to the problem.

Problem 5) Psychology does not understand the importance of time in the operation of the mind.

Problem 6) Psychology does not understand the illusory nature of perception.

Problem 7) Psychiatry Scarry people, they can shoot you up with dopazene. Maybe that’s where the assholes are.

Problem 8) Psychology is focused on finding what is wrong with the thought process rather than on how to optimized emotional stability.  If you’re a hammer, everything starts looking like nails.

9) The is no room for self in psychology.  Not even an attempt to seek to optimize the person for who HE/SHE is supposed to be.

There is a psychological term, superficiality, which just means someone who deals with the world in a superficial manner.  Oddly, there is no mention of non-superficiality.

Here I stand

There is a story of a young, but earnest Zen student who approached his teacher, and asked the Master, “If I work very hard and diligently, how long will it take for me to find Zen? The Master thought about this, then replied, “Ten years . .” The student then said, “But what if I work very, very hard and really apply myself to learn fast — How long then?” Replied the Master, “Well, twenty years.” “But, if I really, really work at it, how long then?” asked the student. “Thirty years,” replied the Master. “But, I do not understand,” said the disappointed student. “At each time that I say I will work harder, you say it will take me longer. Why do you say that?” Replied the Master, “When you have one eye on the goal, you only have one eye on the path.”

This is the dilemma I’ve faced within the American education system. We are so focused on a goal, whether it be passing a test, or graduating as first in the class. However, in this way, we do not really learn. We do whatever it takes to achieve our original objective.

Some of you may be thinking, “Well, if you pass a test, or become valedictorian, didn’t you learn something? Well, yes, you learned something, but not all that you could have. Perhaps, you only learned how to memorize names, places, and dates to later on forget in order to clear your mind for the next test. School is not all that it can be. Right now, it is a place for most people to determine that their goal is to get out as soon as possible.

I am now accomplishing that goal. I am graduating. I should look at this as a positive experience, especially being at the top of my class. However, in retrospect, I cannot say that I am any more intelligent than my peers. I can attest that I am only the best at doing what I am told and working the system. Yet, here I stand, and I am supposed to be proud that I have completed this period of indoctrination. I will leave in the fall to go on to the next phase expected of me, in order to receive a paper document that certifies that I am capable of work. But I contest that I am a human being, a thinker, an adventurer – not a worker. A worker is someone who is trapped within repetition – a slave of the system set up before him.But now, I have successfully shown that I was the best slave. I did what I was told to the extreme. While others sat in class and doodled to later become great artists, I sat in class to take notes and become a great test-taker. While others would come to class without their homework done because they were reading about an interest of theirs, I never missed an assignment. While others were creating music and writing lyrics, I decided to do extra credit, even though I never needed it. So, I wonder, why did I even want this position? Sure, I earned it, but what will come of it? When I leave educational institutionalism, will I be successful or forever lost? I have no clue about what I want to do with my life; I have no interests because I saw every subject of study as work, and I excelled at every subject just for the purpose of excelling, not learning. And quite frankly, now I’m scared.

John Taylor Gatto, a retired school teacher and activist critical of compulsory schooling, asserts, “We could encourage the best qualities of youthfulness – curiosity, adventure, resilience, the capacity for surprising insight simply by being more flexible about time, texts, and tests, by introducing kids into truly competent adults, and by giving each student what autonomy he or she needs in order to take a risk every now and then. But we don’t do that.” Between these cinderblock walls, we are all expected to be the same. We are trained to ace every standardized test, and those who deviate and see light through a different lens are worthless to the scheme of public education, and therefore viewed with contempt.

H. L. Mencken wrote in The American Mercury for April 1924 that the aim of public education is not “to fill the young of the species with knowledge and awaken their intelligence. … Nothing could be further from the truth. The aim … is simply to reduce as many individuals as possible to the same safe level, to breed and train a standardized citizenry, to put down dissent and originality. That is its aim in the United States.”

To illustrate this idea, doesn’t it perturb you to learn about the idea of “critical thinking.” Is there really such a thing as “uncritically thinking?” To think is to process information in order to form an opinion. But if we are not critical when processing this information, are we really thinking? Or are we mindlessly accepting other opinions as truth?

This was happening to me, and if it wasn’t for the rare occurrence of an avant-garde tenth grade English teacher, Donna Bryan, who allowed me to open my mind and ask questions before accepting textbook doctrine, I would have been doomed. I am now enlightened, but my mind still feels disabled. I must retrain myself and constantly remember how insane this ostensibly sane place really is.

And now here I am in a world guided by fear, a world suppressing the uniqueness that lies inside each of us, a world where we can either acquiesce to the inhuman nonsense of corporatism and materialism or insist on change. We are not enlivened by an educational system that clandestinely sets us up for jobs that could be automated, for work that need not be done, for enslavement without fervency for meaningful achievement. We have no choices in life when money is our motivational force. Our motivational force ought to be passion, but this is lost from the moment we step into a system that trains us, rather than inspires us.

We are more than robotic bookshelves, conditioned to blurt out facts we were taught in school. We are all very special, every human on this planet is so special, so aren’t we all deserving of something better, of using our minds for innovation, rather than memorization, for creativity, rather than futile activity, for rumination rather than stagnation? We are not here to get a degree, to then get a job, so we can consume industry-approved placation after placation. There is more, and more still.

The saddest part is that the majority of students don’t have the opportunity to reflect as I did. The majority of students are put through the same brainwashing techniques in order to create a complacent labor force working in the interests of large corporations and secretive government, and worst of all, they are completely unaware of it. I will never be able to turn back these 18 years. I can’t run away to another country with an education system meant to enlighten rather than condition. This part of my life is over, and I want to make sure that no other child will have his or her potential suppressed by powers meant to exploit and control. We are human beings. We are thinkers, dreamers, explorers, artists, writers, engineers. We are anything we want to be – but only if we have an educational system that supports us rather than holds us down. A tree can grow, but only if its roots are given a healthy foundation.

For those of you out there that must continue to sit in desks and yield to the authoritarian ideologies of instructors, do not be disheartened. You still have the opportunity to stand up, ask questions, be critical, and create your own perspective. Demand a setting that will provide you with intellectual capabilities that allow you to expand your mind instead of directing it. Demand that you be interested in class. Demand that the excuse, “You have to learn this for the test” is not good enough for you.Education is an excellent tool, if used properly, but focus more on learning rather than getting good grades.

For those of you that work within the system that I am condemning, I do not mean to insult; I intend to motivate. You have the power to change the incompetencies of this system. I know that you did not become a teacher or administrator to see your students bored. You cannot accept the authority of the governing bodies that tell you what to teach, how to teach it, and that you will be punished if you do not comply. Our potential is at stake.

For those of you that are now leaving this establishment, I say, do not forget what went on in these classrooms. Do not abandon those that come after you. We are the new future and we are not going to let tradition stand. We will break down the walls of corruption to let a garden of knowledge grow throughout America. Once educated properly, we will have the power to do anything, and best of all, we will only use that power for good, for we will be cultivated and wise. We will not accept anything at face value. We will ask questions, and we will demand truth.

So, here I stand. I am not standing here as valedictorian by myself. I was molded by my environment, by all of my peers who are sitting here watching me. I couldn’t have accomplished this without all of you. It was all of you who truly made me the person I am today. It was all of you who were my competition, yet my backbone. In that way, we are all valedictorians.

I am now supposed to say farewell to this institution, those who maintain it, and those who stand with me and behind me, but I hope this farewell is more of a “see you later” when we are all working together to rear a pedagogic movement. But first, let’s go get those pieces of paper that tell us that we’re smart enough to do so!

Normally i don’t like to use professional terms, they are often misunderstood by the average reader.  In this case however it is necessary because urban language does not capture the nuances understood by the more educated. Technically these people referred to by Mr M are defined as assholes.  It is necessary to examine the asshole and his environment to be able to help him recover his serenity.  His parents are typically also assholes, he/she’s usually married to an asshole, his preacher is an asshole, his boss is an asshole, the church congregation are assholes, and his kids are developing, the classic symptoms of the asshole.  They’re working on their asshole badge in cub scouts.  Recent studies have shown this must be because no one else will put up with their shit.  Understanding all this must bring a sadness to the heart of any Christian, an empathy for our fellow man. We must reach out to him and share our love as Christ commanded.

It is, of course, obvious that the asshhole is oblivious to his affliction, that being the nature of assholes.  So how can we help?  All we can do is inform him of his affliction so he/she can take the proper steps to recover.  How can he seek salvation without  knowing his problem?  Sometimes the old ways are best.  An effective communication technique is the finger.

Sometimes it’s necessary to use the horn to attract his attention.  I think of it as God using me as a conduit to enlighten. After that, it’s up to him, and you can continue on your way, knowing you are doing God’s work.

I find this approach brings me peace, tranquility and a sense of satisfaction.  I just get all warm and fuzzy inside.

We live in a society of lies. Not just lies, but agendas, mis-truths, deceptions, religion, politics, finance, ideology. I don’t mean to imply that lies are common, or widespread, or dominant, nah, they are UNIVERSAL. My favorite is the nested lie. Take for instance a news announcement “new claims for unemployment have dropped by 50%”. this would lead one to think that unemployment has improved. WRONG! While most people can see through this lie, they will accept the underlying lie. (IE things suck, and they are getting suckier.) Within that lie is that the total drawing claims has increased. Within that lie is that the statements only apply to NEW claims and do not count those that have run out of benefits. Within that lie is that the method for determining unemployment changes to suit the conditions. Within that lie is that the military is included which is not in the labor pool. Like the matryoshka, each time a lie is exposed, another is revealed. If the nesting is deep enough, eventually the “Big Lie” will be accepted. Why do they do it? Because they can, people are stupid. It works. It is just the zombies trying to eat your brains, or Ayn Rand’s beast, or the abyss, or the wall. “Recent studies have shown” prefixed to any lie will give it credibility. Choice of words, “Free Trade” “Truth in lending” “Sunshine law” “Fair taxation”. An entrenching tool is much more sinister that a shovel. Is there really a difference between a “Freedom Fighter” and an “insurgent”, or a “warlord” and a “tribal elder”? Yes, it depends on what they want us to think. Obfuscation in voluminous legislation is another example.

How do we grow to a society that is for the good of its members? We can’t. Eliminating an asshole only creates a vacuum for an idiot to fill and become an asshole. We have to grow members that are good for society. It starts from the bottom up, not the top down.

A central question in my mind has always been “How did belief come to replace truth?” How did unsubstantiated data and illogic come to be used in the decision making process? In my view the majority of mankind is either stupid (reject data) or crazy (reject logic) to the detriment of the individual and society as a whole.

How can anyone think that there is anything but a superficial difference between Republicans and Democrats? How can anyone think that the dollar is money? How can anyone think that capitalism is necessary? How can anyone think that democracy works? How can anyone think that men and women aren’t different? How can anyone think that justice is just? How can anyone not think that evolution has merit?

Is there a god? Dunno. I hope so. If there is, there is no evidence that he cares one way or another about mankind. Is there a devil? Nope, there is plenty of evil inherent in mankind to account for all the evil in the world. If there is a god, which one? If born in the west, it would be Jesus, If born in the Mideast it would be Allah. If born in India it would be Lord Shiva. The secular religions of the orient do have some merit, Tao, Zen, Buddhism, Veda, Confucius. The “true” god is an accident of birth. How can someone not understand that it is a requirement of their faith that god adhere to their beliefs? In which case, he’s not god. Mankind created god in their own image and imbued him with their own beliefs.

The basic answer comes down to deceit. It can be imprinting, indoctrinating children at an early age, religion for instance, or obfuscation, hiding the truth in bizarre labyrinths of illogic,
